Main Support
A support role — Lúcio, Mercy, Brig — focused on area healing, mobility boosts, and formation tempo rather than damage output.
Where the flex support handles single-target amplification and debuffs — "who can we kill, which CD swings the fight" — the main support's role is to hold up the team's mobility and tempo as a whole. Lucio's speed and area heal, Mercy's pocket + Boost, Brig's CC + Rally are the archetypes. In pro play the main support tends to be the IGL leading engage speed, formation, and the disengage read, since they sit in the position that can call "go or pull" earliest. Hero classification blurred in 5v5, but it still functions as shared language for the division of labor: who owns the formation's mobility.
Calling the Rush entry off a Beat Engage — the read and the go-call. Leading the formation's speed buff and its regroups. Peel-first defense when the enemy dives you.
The main support pushes too far forward, becomes the dive target, and drops out of the team's area-heal coverage. Mistiming the speed buff so the engaging teammates go in without it — a "dry engage".
Tempo
The initiative — who gets to choose when and on whose terms the next fight starts.
Staging
Pre-fight phase where all 5 players align positions, sightlines, and retreat routes before engaging.
Dribble
Tank repeatedly steps in and out to bait cooldowns and ammo without ever committing.
Flex Support
A support pick like Ana, Zen, or Bap whose damage output, debuffs, or utility swing fights beyond healing.
Anti-Dive Comp
A composition built around peel — Brig, Lucio, etc. — that turns the enemy's dive into a one-way trip.
